The Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLAT) Interdisciplinary Roundtable is a conference organized and run by members of SLATSA, the SLAT student association, and supported by our Faculty Supervisor, Dr. Hayriye Kayi-Aydar, as well as faculty and staff, including Robin Staples and Kelly Merriam Castro.

Welcome to the 16th annual SLAT Interdisciplinary Roundtable! I’d like to extend a very warm welcome to those of you visiting Tucson, and a heartfelt thank you to all of you joining us for what is sure to be a productive and exciting weekend of scholarship and research!

This year’s Roundtable features 24 presentations on a variety of topics within SLA given by graduate students and faculty representing in-state, out-of-state, and international universities. It also features 2 pedagogical workshops, a poster session, and the brand new Projects-in-Progress Symposium.

On behalf of the SLAT Student Association, I hope you enjoy your time at the SLAT Interdisciplinary Roundtable!

Dr. Heidi Byrnes

Heidi Byrnes' research addresses a range of issues pertaining to adult instructed second language learning and teaching, with a particular emphasis on German. She is one of the most distinguished foreign language education scholars in the USA, with contributions that include investigations into the nature of linguistic competencies that develop through foreign language instruction.

Invited Speaker
Dr. Kara McBride

Kara McBride’s education, research and professional path are marked by interdisciplinarity and intercultural encounters. After graduating from SLAT, she worked as first an Assistant and then Associate Professor at Saint Louis University. She now works in Washington, DC at the nonprofit organization World Learning, whose mission is to empower people and strengthen institutions through education, exchange, and development programs.
